Dear brothers and sisters and friends of GMC,

I only have 2 months left in GMC.

Friday night, Mui Foon’s small group bid me and family farewell. It gave me a chance to describe the history of God’s calling to do Master of Theology in BM. I just want to put it down briefly in writing here.

Ever since my secondary school and university (USM) days (1979 – 1991), I paid great attention to BM. It was partly Malaysian government educational emphasis to pass it, that motivated to be so keen about the language. Now, as I looked back, I see it as God’s conviction and preparation for me to use BM as a means to make disciples among the indigenous people of Sarawak!

When I became a pastor, under challenge by Rev Dr Tie’s sermon, I am convinced that BM is a language in Malaysia that God uses for us to reach out to the indigenous people. I have been doing indigenous people ministry using BM for about 10 years with SCAC team now. I have no regret about it as BM ministry is flourishing. We now have established BM congregations in Sibu (2), Kuching (3), Miri (1), and Bintulu (1). Recently, for the past few years, whenever it comes to the end of the year posting of pastors, we learn of heart cry for BM pastors in lots of churches! Indigenous people are flocking to the towns in Sarawak. Harvests are plentiful but workers are few.

A few years ago, while on my way to Brunei to minister to one brother, God gave me a vision to train BM pastors and missionaries. Since SCAC vision is to see BM congregations planted in different towns, so, we need to train BM pastors. The need to establish a BM theological department in our own Sibu Theological School came to my mind. With that vision, I wrote to Board of Ministry, SCAC, for permission to do the Masters. They granted the approval to do it in 2011 and 2012.

Do pray that I am faithful to that God’s calling; and I am able to mobilize a team of BM speaking pastors to start BM department in a few times’ upon my graduation. I may not be serving as a full time lecturer as my fundamental calling is to be a pastor. I want to be a model BM speaking pastor for the BM congregations. My thesis is along the line of how to overcome cultural barriers as pastor and shepherd the indigenous people to become matured disciples of Jesus.

A faithful disciple of Jesus,

Pastor Law Hui Seng
